Painting a Metal Roof

Can you paint a Metal Roof?

If you own a metal roof that's needs a little TLC, fear not! You can paint a metal roof and get it looking like new. You may be asking yourself, how do you paint a metal roof? Well, it's easier than you might think. If your metal roof has seen better days, there's a good chance all it needs is a coat or two of paint. Once you freshen it up you'll be the envy of the neighborhood! Luckily, it's a lot cheaper to paint a metal roof than it is to install a new metal roof. The basic premise behind painting a metal roof is nothing more than preparation and an eye for color.

***Working on a roof can be very dangerous, take all the necessary precautions you can, and if you're in doubt, hire a qualified professional!***

Roof Preparation

  • The most important thing to do is to begin by cleaning your surface with a 3500 psi pressure washer. The majority of paint systems that fail are due to improper preperation.
  • While using your pressure washer, properly clean your surface with TSP (Tri-Sodium Phosphate).  This will ensure that most of the rust and dirt will be removed prior to painting.
  • After you've finished cleaning your roof, make sure you do a thorough inspection prior to painting. Check for potential leaks or problem areas such as damaged flashings, leaking chimney caps, fasteners that have backed out or are missing.
  • Existing rust needs to be primed. Look into a spot primer to treat the existing area. Make sure you use a brush to fully penetrate the area of concern.

Painting

  • When painting, make sure you apply the paint at the recommended temperature. If it's too cold outside the paint will have a hard time drying, and if it's too warm, the paint will dry too quickly.
  • Can be done either by roller or by using an airless paint sprayer.
  • Make sure you apply the recommended coatings to ensure the longest life possible.
  • Follow the manufacturers instructions!

Painting a metal roof really isn't as difficult as you may think.  Take your time and do it right the first time. If you take shortcuts, chances are you'll have to do it again.

Good Luck!
